I thought the St. Mary’s Mission was founded by Father Ravalli. We had planned to take my father to Great Falls–he became a big Charlie Russell fan after N.B.C. televised a special on the artist–and swing down through Stevensville and into Idaho in 1969 or 1970. We had taken him to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in 1968, but his cancer took a turn for the worse and we were unable to go. I still want to make that trip!

I just thought of something else. In his book on historic churches, Lambert Florin included a photo of a small doll-house like model of one of the first mission churches in the Oregon Territory. There are no drawings of what the original church at the Oregon location may have looked like, and Florin noted that the model bore an uncanny ressemblance to St. Mary’s in Montana. As it turned out, the model was built by an elderly parishioner who had been a parishioner–and I believe a sexton–at St. Mary’s for a good many years before moving to Oregon.

I would like to see Hipshot in the background with his particular brand of wisdom.
